The Dangers of Genetically-modified (GMO) Crops
GM foods or genetically modified foods (GMF-genetically modified food) are foods which are processed from the body; plants carrying the recombinant gene are converted artificially to serve the economic benefits. The world population has increased more than 6 billion people and is expected to exceed more than 12 billion after 50 years. The problem providing enough food is a problem for humanity very big problem. In the solution of many countries are concerned that expanding research and deployment foods gene transfer. But using GMO makes scientists argue about potential risks to human health.
"USDA scientists know all of this, of course, and they understand that herbicide-resistant weeds are nothing new. According to the supporters, GMC (Genetically modified crops) brought huge benefits for humans. Outstanding advantages of genetically modified foods is create crop varieties with high productivity, good quality, food security or create profit and social economy, reduce poverty in developing countries. GMOs improve food quality, increase the value and nutrition technology suitable for processing. For example, if the switch genes, rice contain more vitamin A and minerals, corn and potatoes contain rich in more starch, soy and canola oil contains many more health benefits. GMOs also are more resistant to insects, resistance herbicides ... contribute to increased crop productivity or can resistant the extreme weather conditions: under cold, drought, salinity ... The creation of these plants grow well in dry areas term, high salinity or cold climate will help to increase crop productivity. With such advantages, provided GMOs genetically modified food for both humans and animals is growing very strongly. The GMC types are varied such as soybeans, corn, cotton, coffee, potatoes, tobacco, GMC and GMF (Genetically-modified foods) also help businesses operate in this area earn huge profits. The decisions of each country are different. U.S always is the first country which scientific achievements openly.
However, the GMF met with strong opposition by many sectors of society around the world. Besides the benefits of genetically modified organisms brings, it also much view with serious concern genetically modified organisms can occur. For humans and environmental, GMOs can cause toxic, allergic and affect soil microorganisms. A lot of researches have shown the dangers of this kind of food for humans. Testing on animals has ascertained ability to cause cancer. It also raised fears will carcinogenic to humans. The Environmental Protection rejected the view that GMC can improve productivity and quality of crops. According to them, they want the method of breeding and traditional varieties. With the above concerns, people require must labeling to differentiate GMF with traditional food spread in almost all the countries in the presence of food.
For biosecurity, ensuring human health and balance ecological environment, so GMO crops and products must be evaluated on biosecurity and management of risk is can occur. Biosecurity GMOs are safe management methods in activities: scientific research, technology development and testing; production, sales and use, import, export, storage and transport transfer of genetically modified organisms and products and goods originating from genetically modified organisms. "Since the development of GM crops, many discussion forums, studies, and publications have been devoted to them. The rules of international biosafety mainly refers to biosecurity in agriculture, now many organizations are mobilizing to go to unified rules of international biosafety, as the risk introduction of new artificial creatures and even the robot is able to intervene directly in the natural food chain. GMO research is incomplete both internationally and also cannot conclude to reject GMO food.
Risk assessment is the process of a scientific assessment to consider before the risk to humans and the environment nature objects using genetically modified organism specific. Risk management measures is to reduce the risk to as low as or at least be acceptable.
Little research has been conducted on human health and animals. However, in most countries all GM crops being tested in animal trials to prove its safety before it is approved for use and marketing. GM crops not only raise environmental risks, it can also trouble farmers and food producers. Many countries have laws for GMOs and some require consumer freedom of choice to buy GM products. In many countries, and especially in the European Union, consumers are required choice between foods derived from GM crops and conventional plant production or organic. This requires a labeling system as well as the reliable separation of GM and non-GM crops at the school and throughout the entire production chain. Many countries have established labeling regulations and guidelines on coexistence and traceability. People worry that genetically modified foods have negative impacts to the human body, can cause ecological imbalance. Many comments said that the foreign gene implanted into food will have an adverse effect on human health, such as allergies, reduce resistance, and even cause cancer. Although no scientific evidence about the potential dangers of genetically modified foods on human health, but consumers are still advised to use products with natural origin.
My own opinions, GMOs are unsafe foods, because at present the research is still being controversial. My problem GMOs is the economic benefit, but I need to know is it safe for my health or not. If future GMF technology is improved, people can make GMF in backyard like we are planning the trees now, they are used to create a new GMF to harm others or damage to the environment, don’t they? They have enough knowledge to create a new species, or they will use GMOS for personal purposes and illegal, for example, they can be harvested from a orange trees in the backyard, what happens if we do not control them. Long-term research about impact on human health is very necessary for food safety and should be done independently by the government.
