A Model To Explain Self Awareness Philosophy Essay

The size of Johari Window can be change base of the knowledge of ourselves and others towards us. Moving on open area, some call it as free area because all people know things about us for example our behaviors, attitudes, feelings, knowledge and skill. For example, Jack is an actor and he knows he is good in acting and peoples notice it too. DeVito (1998) declares that when we increase our open area, we are increasing ourselves awareness. Our open area should be bigger than other quadrants by self-exposure or disclosing ourselves. Self-exposure means we share our data to others. Chapmen (2005) declares that open area size increase vertically downward of hidden area by disclosure data. Others can help us increase our free area by asking us personal question. However DeVito (1998) demonstrates that the size of our open area is varies from person to person. Usually our open area size is bigger to person that we believe and comfortable because we have big disclosure with them. For example, students and students have big free area but students and teacher just having small free area. Luft (n.d) states when we expose ourselves, we increasing our open area because we share our behaviors, perceptions and secrets. DeVito (1998) asserts that some people making us comfortable and supports us. With these peoples we tend to open or disclosure ourselves. For instance, if we are given a task and have to work with a new community, our open area still small because we still do not each other well. But as the team’s bonding became stronger our open area becomes bigger as we start to believe each other and sharing lots of experience, thoughts and behaves with them. At this stage, we are making a good relationship with other members and according to Luft (n.d) we are creating more "commonality" with others members. Sometimes we increase our open area and decrease our hidden area because we want to decrease the distance between us and others. Chapman (2005) proposes that we are being confident with ourselves when we are increasing our free area size. Working with others will help us develop our free area because we need to open ourselves, start to believe each other so we can cooperate with them. A good productivity came from good cooperation.

‘The open area can be seen as the space where good communications and cooperation occur, free from distractions, mistrust, confusion, conflict and misunderstanding’

Disclosure our open area help us to have meaningful communication. Devito (1998) declares that communication became difficult if we did not allow others to know who we are. Only when we know ourselves, others know ourselves, and we know others too, then we can communicate meaningfully.

The second quadrant of Johari Window is blind area and some call it blind self. DeVito (1998) claims blind self consists of information about ourselves that we do not know but others know. Most of blind self are something sensitive and usually came from insignificant habit. Habit can be included in our blind area because we never noticed about it. For example, some peoples like to rub their nose while talking with others. Luft (n.d) asserts when we disclosing ourselves, we increase our open area decreasing our blind area. DeVito (2008) declares that peoples will comment on what you do, what you say and how you look. The way we speak to our friends, the way we acts, and our behaves allow peoples to judge and value ourselves So, to know more about ourselves, we should reduce our blind self. DeVito (1998) demonstrates that some peoples have very big of blind area and they still did not realized it. But for people that already knew about their blind self, they seek therapy for themselves. As claims by DeVito (1998 pg 45) ‘although we may be able to shrink our blind areas, we can never eliminate them’. This means we will always have our blind self so we need to always explore it by asking our friends. Usually, peoples don’t want to tell us about our blind area because they do not want us to get hurt because our blind self are mostly sensitive and rarely positive. But one of the ways we can fully know about ourselves is by knowing our blind self. Others can help us to reduce our blind area by telling us the truth about ourselves. However, we need to be open minded and must accept others opinion about us even though most of it is hurting us. We have to know about our blind area so we can fix our weakness and lead to be a better person. By the way, DeVito (2008) states that peoples that involve with our interpersonal relationship view us differently. Try asking strangers that we just meet in the bus and our family on their perspective on us. They will give very different answer as our family members know us better. The strangers may have negative impression on us as they meet us for the first time. So here, we can take action and try to improve ourselves to make strangers have positive impression on us. Chapman (2005) analyses that working in a group can help us to decrease our blind area automatically increase our free area by giving sensitive feedback. For example, we had given a task and we failed to manage it. We may not realize that our blind self contributes to our failure. The other members may tell us the negative unknown data about us. Here, we should accept it and try to fix our weaknesses because this will lead us to have positive changes and we can produce better quality of work. DeVito (1998) demonstrate that we should mix with nurturing people. Besides telling us about our blind area, they will help us to resolve and reduce our blind self. As DeVito (2008) claims when we disclose ourselves we are getting new information about ourselves and understanding more about own behaviors. Conclusion, knowing our blind self is must even though it hurt in way to improve our self-awareness and become a better person.

Hidden area or hidden self is the third quadrant of Johari Window. Hidden area contains information that known by us but unknown by others because we keep the data as secret and not reveal to anyone in whatever reasons. This area may include our feelings, our sensitivity, fears, hidden agendas and secrets. Usually we keep our hidden self because we feel embarrass if we reveal it to others and being rejected by others. For example, some of the gay will never tell their family that they are being homosexual because their family may reject them. According to Chapman (2005) it is natural for everyone to have secrets and feel wants to remain it hidden. But some of our hidden information is better if we put it in open area. For hidden area, we might be over disclosure or under disclosure. DeVito (1998) mentions that if over disclosure peoples will tell everything or keep nothing secret about them. They tell their family history, sexual problems, financial status and everything. But for under discloser they will tell nothing even though to their best friends. But DeVito (1998) analyses that most of us are selective disclosure because we tend to disclose to people that we believe and keep hidden for the certain peoples. Chapman (2005) proposes that the size of hidden area will be decrease and making our open area size bigger through disclosure process too. Usually the closer we with someone, our hidden area’s size will be smaller. Chapman (2005) declares that the feeling to whom individual want to disclose will always be individual’s own discretion. Usually we will share our hidden information with people that we believe and close. Because we close with them, we feel comfortable with them and this lead to sharing our hidden data with them. But in some case, they just know each other for one week and both feel comfortable with each other. So they start to disclose themselves and decrease their hidden area. Lastly they become best friend and produce good relationship. Here, it is proven that being honest can help us to build a new relationship. Sometimes we hide our hidden data because we feel save to hide it. For instance, we tend to hide everything from someone that we just know. We never tell them out bank account and secret because we do not know who actually they are. According to chapman (2005), decreasing our hidden area is needed when we cooperate with others to have better understanding, team working effectiveness, trust and work productivity. These because we reduce our hidden area, automatically we reduce the potential of misunderstanding and all the things that can distract our team effectiveness. When we disclose ourselves to others, they will start to know who we are and understanding more about us. With this, they can start to cooperate with us and know about us better. Disclose our hidden area can make our communication with others better. If we are having a free speak with our friends, they will never talk about something that we dislike. But if we never disclose with them, they may speak a topic that we dislike. Besides, we need to disclose our hidden self so other can help us became better. Being a gay, they should tell their family so their family can help them. Maybe the family members get mad at first but family members will always help the members that are having problem. So, telling others about our hidden data whether it good or bad is important. They will try to help us if the hidden data that we disclose to them is negative. By the way, some information should always be hidden. For politicians, if they had been seen psychiatrist they will keep this data as a secret. If this being reveal, they may lost their voters.

The last quadrant is unknown self. Unknown self contains data that unknown by us and also to others. The common unknown area is our future, our hidden talent, trauma and illness. DeVito (2008 pg 57) asserts that ‘sometimes our unknown self is revealed through hypnosis, projective tests and dreams’. It is good that we do not know about our future so we tend to be careful and hardworking. We never know whether we will fail or success in exam. So before exam, we tend to make hard work and try to get flying colors in exam. By the way, we should reduce our unknown area in way to know who we are. We and others will never acknowledge our hidden talent until we discover it through practice. Chapman (2005) demonstrates that there are many ways to uncover our unknown self, whether through self-discovery or observations by others. So, we should involve more in social activities that are more relate to self-discovery. For example, if we involving in hiking activity for the first time, after that we can know whether we love it or not. We will feel happy when we meet our new interest and feel enthusiastic to do it again. Here we are learning about ourselves. Give time for us to explore ourselves. If we are having a trauma, it will be unknown area. This is because we tend to forget our bad memories. Jongkook has trauma towards swimming pool. When he was a kid, he almost died in swimming pool as he cannot swim. When he grows up, he became fobia with swimming pool and never talk about pool with his friends because he wants to forget his bad memories. Lastly Jongkook will forget about this experience and others also will never know about his bad memory. But we should always take care about illness. We will never know about our illness until we made checkup. We should explore our unknown data so we can try to manage ourselves. Knowing that we have illness after checkup with doctor, we can make treatment to recovery. But if we never explore our unknown area, we will never take treatment and make our life worse. Exploring our unknown self is must in way to know ourselves better.

In conclusion, efforts must be taken to increase our open area and decreasing our blind area, hidden area and unknown area. When we have very big open area, we can say ‘I know who I am’. Devito (2008) claims that self-exposure give positive effect to psychological health. According to Pennebacker (as quoted in DeVito, 2008) people who love disclose their selves are less vulnerable to illness.
