Redifining Human Rights Oshos Vision Philosophy Essay

While speaking on The Declaration of Human Rights, Osho has exposed it as a political device to maintain man in his current state of physical and psychological slavery, and to ensure that he remains ignorant of his true potential for godliness.(1)

According to Osho, we are living in a society which is hypocrite. The politicians, the people in power have done everything to prevent human evolution. They have left no stone unturned to hinder the human growth. And the best way they could do it is to convince man, "You are already civilized." "You are already a human being" (2). So all transformation is just unnecessary. It is just not required.

Osho says that the very fact that in three thousand years, five thousand wars have been fought simply proves that man is still not civilized.

So Declaration of Human Rights is nothing but hypocrisy and the people have been deceived. "You are being told things, and you accept them without even looking all around to see whether those things coincide with the reality or not."(3)

OSHO’S OBJECTIONS TO THE DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

-His first objection to this declaration is that rights can not be talked about unless the duties are defined. Duties come first. "Without duties rights can only be talked about, but you won’t have them in your hands."(4)

-Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,(5 )

According to Osho, this right has two implications

that the humanity is civilized (this has simply been accepted by the people who have made this declaration)

That the humanity has conscience.

Which according to Osho are both lies because humanity is still not civilized and it has no conscience. People fight, kill each other in the name of religion, in the name of God and Osho doesn’t see anywhere anybody feeling bad our outraged about it.

He says "if people are outraged things will change- because who is doing them? We are doing them."(6)

The sentence in the beginning of the declaration is just a lie according to Osho. It says "Barbarous acts …."According to Osho "In thousand years we have not been able to do so many barbarous activities as we have done just within fifty years. We are becoming more and more barbarous – of course with a style and method"(7 ) Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the biggest examples. And then the declaration says that because of these barbarous acts, the so-called civilized people feel a prick of conscience. And Conscience is something very strange they are talking about because according to Osho no human being is ever born with conscience. Its something which arises only after meditation. According to Osho "I don’t think any of the politicians who made this declaration have any experience of what conscience is. It comes only after a long, long pilgrimage inwards. You are given everything by birth. You are given by birth only the necessary things for survival; everything else is given only as a seed. If you are intentionally interested in evolving your consciousness to its highest peak, then it is up to you"

ARTICLE ONE

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. (8)

According to Osho the very idea is sheer nonsense. "If all human beings are born free, leave a child in freedom: he will die within twenty four hours. Man’s child is the most helpless child in the whole world- what freedom can he have? He cannot walk, he cannot talk, he cannot fly…" (9) So all human beings by birth are helpless and dependent. The declaration says you are born free but everyone knows from his or her experience no one is ever free. "The husband is there, the wife is not free. The wife is there, the husband is not free."(10). So these human rights have done nothing else than conditioning the humanity. You are born free, so there is no need to fight for freedom. This way East has been far more truthful according to Osho. "It says you are born in bondage, not that you are born free. Your body is in prison and your mind and your brains are prisons" (11). According to Osho no human being is every born with the traits of freedom or consciousness. These have to be discovered. These qualities are hidden and dormant. They have to be made dynamic. But to tell people that they are born free- equal in dignity and rights is no less than committing a crime.

No human being is equal. Each individual according to Osho is born unique. "Every human being is a category unto himself."(12)Uniqueness of an individual has to be recognized, has to be respected and without that no Human Rights can ever be given. "Unless we recognize the uniqueness of each individual there are not going to be any Human Rights, and there is not going to be a civilized world-human, loving, and rejoicing."(13) According to Osho the idea of equality is "the most destructive idea that has penetrated into the human mind" (14)

"They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."

Now are these are pure assumptions without any validity in Osho’s vision. "All human beings are not born with reason, are not endowed with reason."(15)

According to Osho we are living in a superstitious world where Christians believe that Jesus was born to a virgin mother. So how can one say that human beings are rational beings. "But to say that man is endowed with reason by birth. It doesn’t seem so. Looking at the world, it doesn’t seem that it is a rational world. We haven’t been living according to reason; we have been living according to all kinds of irrational things."(16)

… AND CONSCIENCE, AND SHOULD ACT TOWARDS ONE ANOTHER IN A SPIRIT OF BROTHERHOOD.

According to Osho, conscience is something that arises only after deep meditation and never before it and there can be no conscience without consciousness.

ARTICLE TWO

Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.(17)

This article according to Osho is pure bullshit. When Osho entered America he had to declare under oath that he was not an anarchist whereas anarchism in itself is a political ideology. According to Osho, everywhere there is discrimination. In America he stayed in six jails and in all those jails, there was not even a single white man. There were only blacks. So how can the UN Declaration of Human Rights say that there is no discrimination.

-ARTILE THREE

Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.

In this very article, Osho says that death should have been included. In his words "Because birth is not in your hands- you are born without your consent-now only death is there. And you have the choice: either to die without your consent or to die with a dignity of a human being, with your consent. (18)

-ARTICLE NINE

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.

Osho tells that he himself was arrested in America without any arrest warrant. He was put in detention in England not even for an arbitrary reason.

ARTICLE EIGHTEEN

Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

Osho says: "Freedom of thought and expression"- I have never done anything except to express my thoughts. If that is a human right, then no government has anything against me."( ) Whereas his books were put on black list by the then Pope so that no Catholic could read them.

ARTICLE NINETEEN

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

This according to Osho is not right. The news media in India was pressurized by the Indian parliament not to give space to his ideas. The American government had pressurized the Indian government that no news media from the West should be allowed to take his interviews. The parliaments of all the European countries had passed resolutions that he should not be allowed to enter their countries even as a tourist.

ARTICLE TWENTY-TWO

Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.

Osho doesn’t see that anyone is ever allowed to have freedom to develop his or her personality. Then the people who wrote this right were not even aware of what personality is; they don’t even know that personality is false part of one’s being and it has not be developed at all. According to him "Your reality is your individuality, which has to be discovered."( ) In Osho’s opinion Personality is an ugly word which means a mask. And we don’t want people to have masks. People should be natural, spontaneous, themselves.( )

ARTICLE TWENTY FIVE

All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.

Now this according to Osho is not true at all and if at all it is true then marriage looses all its meaning but no body has the courage to say that. And the fact is nowhere children born outside marriage are respected. They are rather condemned in every way possible.
